If you love quilting, or enjoy seeing the fruits of other people’s sewing labors, then you will want to come to St. John’s Episcopal-Lutheran Church on November 12th, from 1 PM – 3PM. There you will get to see 40+ quilts made by church members Kathy Enquist-Young and Shelly Brookshire. The quilts will all be on display for the public before they are lovingly delivered to the Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission (NELM) in Rock Point, Arizona on November 17th. The quilts will provide warmth for many families during the coming months and years.
Kathy and Shelly knew of the needs for the coming cold winter months through the Mission’s website, so they began a project several months ago to make as many quilts as possible and take them all to the Mission before Thanksgiving. They have made all of the quilts and are donating all of the materials and time to this loving project. Several members of the congregation will accompany Kathy and Shelly to deliver the quilts along with other needed materials that are being donated by the congregation.
NELM serves the Navajo community of Rock Point (pop. 2,000). Everyday, the 100% Navajo staff feeds the hungry, prioritizes Christian and cultural learning, focuses on community engagement, and works towards fulfilling basic community needs. In their spiritual and social work, they strive to embody and teach the grace of Jesus and listen to the call of the gospel to serve one another in love.
St. John’s has previously supported the work of this Mission outpost with the proceeds of a pancake breakfast and a rummage sale. St. John’s is committed to providing local support in Williams, and also to both Lutheran and Episcopal agencies focused on individuals and families in need in Arizona.
To see the quilts, you will find St. John’s located in Williams, AZ, at 202 W. Grant Ave. (the corner of Second Street and Grant Avenue).
